Florida Ticket Information

A driver from any state who receives a speeding ticket or commits a moving violation in Florida has three options:

  1. Pay the ticket and accept the points.
  2. Pay the ticket, request a court date and argue your case before the judge.
  3. Pay your ticket, elect to attend traffic school, and keep points off your license.

If you are an out-of-state driver and you choose option #1, the Florida DHSMV will notify your state DMV of your traffic violation. If your state assigns points for traffic offenses, you will receive points for that ticket.

BDI Course Benefits

If you elect to attend Florida traffic school, you will receive the following benefits:

*626.9541, Florida Statutes. If a driver voluntarily completes Florida traffic school for a moving violation, that driver's insurance company may not raise his or her auto insurance rate, cancel the policy, or non-renew it (unless the driver was at fault in a crash).

BDI Course Restrictions

You can elect to attend Florida traffic school unless:

*CDL holders might be able to attend the BDI course for point dismissal if they get a court order.

Notifying the Clerk of the Court

If you elect (i.e. volunteer) to attend traffic school, you must notify the clerk of the court in the county where you received your ticket. Each county has its own system for traffic school election. You can contact the clerk of the court to find out their procedures for paying your ticket and reporting your traffic school completion. We recommend that you do this BEFORE you pay your ticket!
