How does the online Defensive Driving Course work?

Course Length: 8 hours
Number of Units: 8

The course content is offered with a mixture of text and video pages.  Each page has a timer that must expire before you can move to the next page.  The course will automatically save your progress, allowing you to log in and out as your schedule requires.  Each time you login the course will allow you to pick up where you last left off until you have completed.

Final Exam: There is a 50 multiple choice question final exam at the end of the course.  Per DMV rule, you must score an 80% or greater to pass.  You receive an unlimited number of attempts to pass, however you can only attempt the final exam once per 24 hours.  If you do not pass an attempt, you will have the opportunity to go back and review the course material as needed.

ID Verification: Our course uses ID questions to verify your identity throughout.  You will be required to set up 10 ID questions during the course registration, then at random locations, you will be asked one of your 10 ID questions.  Your answer must match the answer provided at registration.  If you answer three questions incorrectly, you will be disqualified from the course.

Completion Certificate: A electronic (PDF format) certificate will be made available to you immediately following a successful completion of the course (passing the final exam).  You can save / print the certificate as needed.  Ticketschool reports all completions to the DMV.  We DO NOT report completions to the court or insurance companies.  It is your responsibility, if taking the course for a ticket or for insurance discount it is your responsibility to get a copy of the completion certificate to the proper authority per their instructions.

Reporting Completions to VA DMV: All completions are reported to the Virginia DMV as required.  This reporting process is how users get their safe driver points if applicable as well as meet a DMV requirement.  Completions are reported each business day.  Completions on weekends or holidays are reported on the next business day.

One of the reasons you can choose to take the course is to receive safe driver points. Virginia licensed drivers have a safe driver point system to encourage safer driving habits. Drivers can earn 1 safe driver point each calendar year they don’t have a ticket or suspension and 5 safe driver points for voluntarily completing a driver improvement course (not due to a ticket). Safe driver points help offset any demerit points that are on your record or could come in the future. This can be helpful to prevent a license suspension, revocation, or other penalty with the DMV. You can take a course once every 2 years for the safe driver point benefit. You cannot get more than 5 safe driver points. If you take the course for a ticket, you will not also receive safe driver points.
We are so confident that you will be satisfied with the quality of course and service that we offer a full 30-day money back guarantee. This guarantee applies to users who are still in progress with the course. Any accounts that have already successfully completed the course, been disqualified for ID verification, or been unable to pass the final exam are not eligible.
